HYDERABAD:Questioning of TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao by the CBI in a decade-old alleged scandal has raised eyebrows both in the government and political circles.
A 10-member CBI team examined KCR on Tuesday in the case pertaining to the cancellation of a contract to the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), a Central government agency under the Urban Development Ministry, and awarding of the same to the executive engineer of the Andhra Pradesh fisheries department when the TRS chief was the union labour minister in the UPA-I dispensation.
The contract was for the construction of ESI hospitals across the then undivided State. The CBI team sought to know from KCR as to why the contract was awarded to the AP fisheries department. It has not released anything officially and it is unclear why it acted suddenly after 10 years. According to sources, the decision to grant permission to the AP fisheries department instead of the NBCC was taken at the residence of KCR in Hyderabad, in the presence of officials of the fisheries department and the ESI.
The issue came to light following the arrest of E Suryanarayana, the then executive engineer of the fisheries department by the Anti-corruption Bureau of AP in 2006. After the ACB stumbled upon some evidence, suggesting the role of the Union government, the latter sounded the CBI in 2011. But, the CBI did not act till about a month ago when it grilled KCR’s then private secretary in Hyderabad.
