Yitzhak Rabin exercises utmost caution for "Operation Thunderbolt"

Israel went on negotiating with Palestinians buying time in bits & peices up to 8 days allowing military plan tested and thoroughly drilled before embarking on rescue mission at Entebbe, Uganda. The daring 90 minute operation was successful killing all 7 Palestinian terrorists, 45 Ugandan soldiers and destroying 11 MIG planes at Entebbe. IDF lost 1commando and 3hostages. All 100+ hostages & plane crew were rescued and brought to Israel safely.

You see the intelligence, information, collection, caution, planning, testing, mitigation etc before embarking on a mission.

In 1976 when Air France Tel Aviv-Athens-Paris flight with 230 passengers, including 85 Israeli passengers, was hijacked to by Palestinian terrorists to Entebbe, Uganda. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and public opinion were heavily in favor of immediate military rescue operation rather than negotiations. Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli Prime Minister ruled out any such imperfect operation in view of a distance of 4000 kms, refueling necessity and other risks.

Rabin says "We are not going to sacrifice more Israeli lives. If the military comes to us with a plan that works, we will examine it. Through French we will negotiate, offer, counter offer, keep the price down. But we we will bring the people home. We will bring them home alive. What ever it takes". "It is not a matter of politics. It's a matter of life & death."

Defense Minister tells IDF "No body is going to any place or doing any thing until we are absolutely sure we are ready"

Rabin "We have not much choice. The dead line is tomorrow. Tell them Yes. We will negotiate. I need more time. I will wait for the last possible moment before we accept any of their terms".

Rabin tells relatives of hostages demanding negotiations and releasing terrorists for safe return of hostages "I believe there is time. But when these 40 terrorist murderers are exchanged, it won't be a cause for celebration. It will be a day of mourning for Israel".

Rabin tell IDF "Alright we will buy you some more time. Continue to negotiate. Get Ba' Aliv to call Amin, again. Keep him happy"

Rabin "If the military plan is not feasible, we must be ready to exchange the prisoners tomorrow".

Rabin on military plan "Because it is not perfect. 200 of our best people on those planes I damn well do have choice".

Leader of the opposition to Rabin "Every time we've gone to the negotiating table, Israel lost".

When Kenya agrees for refueling and medical help and IDF tells "Now, we are ready"
Rabin says "Given the present mood of the country if the rescue mission is a catastrophy Israel may not survive. And yet we have no choice" and then says "GO".

At the end, Rabin insists on unanimous approval of cabinet and opposition leaders otherwise the military planes will turn back in next 10 minutes and 100 Israeli's are trapped in Uganda for the last eight days. Upon touch down at Entebbe, Rabin instructs "Inform United States, Great Britain and France about Operation Thunderbolt". Until then it was a SECRET.
